Summary: This practical, highly accessible guide answers parents’ and professionals’ questions about teaching children with autism spectrum disorders at home. The book helps parents decide whether to homeschool and guides them through the process of beginning and maintaining an effective homeschool program. All the essential questions are addressed, such as:

  • How do you know if homeschooling is right for you and your child?
  • Which homeschool program is best for the child’s learning style and needs?
  • How should a family get started?
  • What is the best way to address social, behavioral, and organizational skills when teaching a child with ASD?
  • When should you transition back to a traditional public school setting?

The book also contains tips and suggestions from real-life parents who have successfully homeschooled their children with ASD and includes lists of helpful resources for homeschoolers.

Homeschooling the Child With Autism

This book, while a bit outdated is an amazing start for anyone with a child with Autism who is looking to homeschool or already is. The outdated parts are the use of the word Aspergers and the links to websites that are no longer around. However you can easily overlook the first and do your own research for the second.

The advice is gold. I learned a lot about how homeschooling can be beneficial for Autism specifically and some tips for making it work for us. Also there is advice for dealing with behaviour issues. We are shown how to deduce what is making our child act that way and what we can do about it for the future.

The back of the book shares some interviews with homeschool parents and homeschooled kids.

I recommend this book as a starting resource.
