Summary: We live in a culture that’s all about self, becoming the best “me” I can be instead of becoming like Jesus. This me-centered message affects every area of our lives–our friendships, our marriages, even our faith–and it breaks each one in different ways. The self-focused life robs our joy, shrinks our souls, and is the reason we never quite break free of insecurity. In this book, Sharon Hodde Miller invites us into a bigger, Jesus-centered vision–one that restores our freedom and inspires us to live for more. She helps readers identify the secret source of insecurity, understand how self-focus sabotages seven areas of our lives, learn four practical steps for focusing on God and others and experience freedom from the burden of self-focus. Anyone yearning for a purpose bigger than “project me” will cherish this paradigm-shifting message of true fulfillment.

Free of Me

I love the premise of the book. Our world is too focused on ourselves, we are self-centered. It is by focusing on God that we become able to be content with what we have and where we are with our lives.

The first half of the book talks about seven areas of our lives that we are often self-centered: God, Family, Appearance, Possessions, Friendships, Calling and Church. In some of those areas, you might wonder how you could possibly be self-focused. For example, I didn’t understand (before reading) how we could make God about us. But Sharon explains how some people make God a Self-Help God, Self-Serving God, Self-Exalting God or Self-Image God as opposed to focusing on who the One True God really is.

Each of those chapters on the seven areas ends with a focus verse, focus prayer and discussion questions. The rest of the book talks about Praise, People, Purpose, Passion and wraps up with Forgetting Yourself without Neglecting Yourself. These sections weren’t as good as the rest of the book but overall the book was a nice reminder to focus on God, and not me.
